Inspired by the light and infinity of the Pacific Northwest landscape, painter James Howell created more than 400 gray paintings over a period of 30 years and developed 12,000 different shades of gray. The “gray” moments of life seemed essential to him – as an attempt to find personal enlightenment: connected with nature and with the help of Taoism, to follow thoughts into infinity.
