100 years before Alexander von Humboldt travelled to South America, there was another scientist, Maria Sybilla Merian. Armed with a prodigious artistic talent and a steadfast iron will, she set sail for Suriname in 1699, in search of undiscovered insects. In doing so, she inscribed herself in history as one of the world’s first female entomologists as well as a sublime naturalist illustrator.
