100 years before scientist Alexander von Humboldt travelled to South America, there was Maria Sybilla Merian. Armed with a prodigious artistic talent and a steadfast iron will, she set sail for Suriname in 1699 in search of undiscovered insects. In doing so, she became one of the world’s first entomologists as well as a sublime naturalist illustrator.
